Hair Art

This is an old poster made for "The Center for Traditional Arts" which was on Morton Street in Shipshewana. It closed when the owner Cliff Pequet became ill. He had a wonderful shop! He had all sorts of antiques and curiosities.

Among his weird and wonderful displays was this piece. It is "Hair Art".

"Hair Art" was a thing long ago. Hair does not degrade like flesh and you could commemorate a loved one by keeping their hair long after they were gone.

Cliff told me that women would send displays of their hair so their husbands would remember them if they were called away for some sort of job or military duty.

I'm bald otherwise I'd be tempted to go to work on some hair art for posterity's sake.
